The respiratory system is essential for gas exchange, allowing oxygen to enter the bloodstream and carbon dioxide to be expelled from the body. The process starts with inhalation, where air enters the body through the nasal cavity or mouth and passes through the pharynx, larynx, and trachea. The trachea branches into bronchi, leading to the lungs, where bronchioles further divide into tiny air sacs called alveoli. Gas exchange occurs at the alveoli, where oxygen diffuses into the blood, and carbon dioxide is expelled. The diaphragm and intercostal muscles play a crucial role in regulating breathing.
